Leadership Opportunity – AMA-MAS Governing Council

The AMA Minority Affairs Section (MAS) Governing Council seeks candidates for the following positions whose terms will begin June 2024 after the AMA Annual Meeting.  

Positions Available 

(Election is April 2024; terms begin June 2024)

  • Medical Student Section (MSS) representative
    One position available. Term is one year. NOTE: The MSS deadline for all medical student leadership opportunities at the AMA is December 17, 2023. After their deliberations, the MSS Governing Council will forward their final nominee(s) to MAS for the Spring election.  MSS nomination form is attached.   • Resident & Fellow Section (RFS) representative
    One position available.  Term is two years.  Nomination deadline is Feb. 23 and the process is administered through RFS.  After their deliberations, the RFS Governing Council will forward their final nominee(s) to MAS for the Spring election.  For RFS nomination forms, visit the RFS website or email [email protected]
  • MAS Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates
    One position available.  Term is three years.  Nomination deadline is Feb. 23.  The nomination form for physicians is attached. Submit all materials by February 23, 2024 to [email protected]

Applications 

  • Members of the MAS GC must be current AMA members and members of MAS.  They should also be members in good standing in the organization or AMA section that they represent. 
  • All nominees must submit the following materials: 
    • AMA-MAS Nomination Form and indicate which designated position on the GC that the nominee is seeking.   
    • A current bio-sketch and photograph must accompany the nominations.   
    • A Conflict-of-Interest form (after the nomination deadline, but prior to the election date).  
    • Organizational endorsement letters will be accepted but are not required. Note that only the name of the individual or entity endorsing the candidate will appear on the ballot.   

Elections 

GC members are elected by the MAS membership electronically in early April each year.  Those who are elected will be expected to attend the AMA Annual Meeting, June 6-9, 2024 as part of orientation.

About the MAS Governing Council  

The AMA Minority Affairs Section (MAS) is guided by a Governing Council (GC) comprised of nine voting members and one non-voting member, as follows: 

  • AMA Medical Student Section (MSS) representative (1) 
  • AMA Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) representative (1) 
  • AMA Young Physician Section (YPS) representative (1) 
  • National Medical Association (NMA)representative (1) 
  • Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) representative (1) 
  • National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) representative (1) 
  • At-Large members (2) 
  • MAS Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates (1) 
  • Immediate-Past Chair (non-voting) 

In June during the Annual Meeting, MAS GC members elect the section’s Chair (who also serves as Alternate Delegate to the House of Delegates), as well as the Vice-Chair.  The MSS Representative is not eligible to serve as Chair or Vice-Chair. 

Participation Expectations 

All GC members are expected to: 

  • Attend all GC meetings and MAS functions.  In-person meetings take place at the Annual Meeting in June (Chicago), the Interim Meeting in November (varying locations), and at least one additional stand-alone meeting in the Spring or the Summer (in conjunction with the annual Section Leadership Retreat in August).   
  • Participate in monthly teleconferences.
  • Participate regularly in email communications, when solicited. 
  • Participate in the work of the section’s Advocacy and Engagement Committees. 
  • Encourage cooperation and communication between the section and their respective organizations.   
  • Prepare reports for each meeting. 
  • Attend the meetings of, and report on the activities of their respective URM medical society or AMA section. 
  • Represent the interests of the section and otherwise serve as a section ambassador. 
  • Complete review of Reference Committee resolutions and reports, as assigned, for full participation during AMA Annual and Interim Meetings. 

Term Limits 

In general, GC members shall serve in a designated position for no more than two three-year terms. This applies to YPS, AAIP, NHMA, NMA and At-Large Representatives. Be advised of the following exceptions: 

  • The Medical Student Section representative may serve for up to three one-year terms. 
  • The Resident and Fellow Section representative may serve for up to two two-year terms. 
  • Prior terms served on the GC in a position do not count toward the term limit of another role on the GC.
